Masks are still required per NYS

June 6, 2021

Dear Fort Plain School Community,

On Friday, June 4, 2021, Dr. Howard A. Zucker, New York State Commissioner of Health, sent a letter to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which indicated that, without information from the CDC to the contrary, effective Monday, June 7, 2021, New York State public schools may lift the mask wearing requirement for students, staff, and visitors on school property. The CDC has not responded to this letter.

Since the issuance of this letter, the Fort Plain School District has received clarification from the Governor’s Office that mask-wearing requirements must remain in place until formal guidance is issued. Therefore, the requirement for masks in schools has not changed.

As this matter continues to evolve, we will promptly update you with any changes. Over the next few days, we anticipate clarification on this matter and intend to work closely with state and local officials regarding Dr. Zucker’s letter and the impact, if any, it may have on the remaining school year.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation and your dedication to the health and well-being of our students and staff.

Sincerely,
John Bishop
Superintendent of Schools

Message from the Superintendent, June 3, 2021

June 3, 2021

Dear Fort Plain School Community,

The District was alerted on May 21, 2021, that inappropriate contact may have occurred between a District Bus Aide and students on a bus. Upon receiving this information, the District immediately placed the employee on administrative leave and contacted local law enforcement. Throughout the duration of the investigation and for the foreseeable future, the District has taken steps to ensure this employee is not permitted on school property.

On June 3, 2021, the employee was arrested by the Gloversville Police Department.

Families with students on the identified bus have been contacted by the Fort Plain Central School District. If you were not contacted, then your child was not identified as riding the same bus as this employee.

As always, the safety and security of District students is our main priority.  The District continues to cooperate with local law enforcement to ensure this matter is handled efficiently and appropriately.

As this matter involves students, please be aware the District is limited in the information we may release.  Should any parent request further information with respect to this matter, you may contact me directly or reach out to the Gloversville Police Department or Montgomery County Sheriff at 518-853-5537.

The district is offering supportive services for students as needed through each school’s counseling department.

Sincerely,
John Bishop
Superintendent

Creativity, comedy and cool new skills – welcome to Team Tech

Creativity, comedy and cool new skills: sixth graders in Matt Heiser’s Team Tech group present all of this in their Tech Team video production.

The video is part newscast, complete with a wild weather forecast; interview show, featuring Mr. Heiser and fellow Harry Hoag Elementary teacher Rob Jenks; and variety show with skits, jokes and how-to segments.

The students wrote, designed, directed, performed, filmed and produced the Hidden Talents video as a project for Team Tech, an activity where the requirements to participate include being creative, learning and using technology, applying themselves, being open to ideas, and getting their other school work done.

In past years, students may have produced a printed newspaper instead of a Team Tech video production. Today’s digital tools, however, provide them with even greater opportunity for expression, skill-building and fun.

District residents approve proposed budget and bus proposition, elect 2 to Board of Education

Fort Plain Central School District residents approved a proposed $21.8 million budget for the 2021-22 school year by a vote of 126 to 15 on May 18, 2021.

They also approved a proposition by a vote of 125 to 16 authorizing the district to acquire school vehicles at a maximum cost of $275,000, with the funds to be drawn from the Bus Purchase Reserve Fund.

Voters also elected Kimberly Keane (126 votes) and Teresa Karker (121 votes) to serve on the Board of Education for three-year terms running from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2024.

The approved 2021-22 budget maintains all academic programming with no increase in the tax levy. The approved school vehicle purchase proposition also will not have an impact on the tax levy, and it will allow the district to replace aging buses and minimize maintenance costs.

“Thank you to all who came out to vote,” said John Bishop, Fort Plain superintendent of schools. “We’re proud of our instructional programs and the services and opportunities we are able to offer our students. We appreciate the community’s support.”
