Annual Notification: Advanced Placement Coursework Opportunities
The following message was sent on May 30, 2025 by Jr./Sr. High School Principal Katrina Canallatos to parents and guardians of students grades 6 -12. This is one of the district’s annual required notifications to families.
Each year, school districts are required to inform families about the opportunities and benefits of advanced coursework. At Fort Plain, we are proud to offer a range of rigorous academic options that support student growth, college readiness and career preparation.
This letter provides important information about advanced coursework available in middle and high school, including how to prepare and enroll, the supports available, and important considerations for families.
What is Advanced Placement Coursework?
Advanced coursework refers to classes that go beyond the typical grade-level curriculum. These may include:
- Honors and accelerated classes.
- Regents and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
- Dual-enrollment or college-credit courses (SUNYA, FMCC).
- Career and technical education programs.
- Courses that lead to industry-recognized certifications.
Why take advanced courses?

- Preparation for college-level work.

How to prepare and enroll?
Students may be placed in advanced coursework through teacher recommendation and/or student or parent request. Counselors are available to support students and families in planning an appropriate academic pathway.
What additional advanced programs are offered?
- Early Admit to FMCC – College courses available during senior year.
- P-TECH – A six-year program that blends high school, college, and career training.
- HFM BOCES Career & Technical Education – Programs with hands-on training and certification opportunities.
What support is offered for students?
To help all students succeed in advanced courses, Fort Plain provides:
- Academic support such as tutoring and teacher office hours.
- Counseling and social-emotional support.
- Flexible scheduling and course planning.
- Financial assistance for qualifying students to reduce or eliminate the cost of AP exams, college course fees, and required materials.
