Meet the new
principal of Harry Hoag Elementary School
 |
Cathy Brucker |
A new but familiar face takes over as
principal of Harry Hoag Elementary School for the 2011-12 school
year. Cathy Brucker, the director of special education since 2004,
will also assume the role of principal at the 489-student school.
The district eliminated an administrator position in the 2011-12
budget, which saves about $90,000 according to district officials.
Mrs. Brucker wanted to perform the duties of both jobs to help the
district save money and pool resources.
“It has always been a goal to be an elementary principal. I’ve
always loved working with children, and I enjoy watching them learn
new skills and ideas,” she said. “Having worked as the director of
special education, I feel I have the entire spectrum of learning in
my sights and I can see all sides.”
Mrs. Brucker received her Master’s in special education from the
College of St. Rose and completed her administrative course work
through the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. The Edinburg
resident has also taught special education in the Northville
Central School District.
“Cathy has a strong reputation in our district and already knows
many of the teachers at the elementary school,” said Superintendent
Douglas C. Burton. “Judging by the job she’s already done as the
director of special education, we’re confident she will provide
strong leadership at the elementary level.”
Mrs. Brucker has already begun planning for the upcoming year. She
is creating teams to work together on curriculum and is also
implementing the state’s new performance evaluation standards – the
Annual Professional Performance Review – for teachers.
She said balancing both positions poses a challenge, but it is one
she looks forward to.
“We have two offices equipped with phenomenal staff and they are
very helpful. It’s going to be a challenge having the
responsibility of two positions, but I look forward to addressing
it,” she said.
“I believe in teamwork, and as a team, I believe it’s important to
establish a positive environment. It’s not just about the school;
it’s about the whole community because parents are a vital part of
education.”
In her free time, Mrs. Brucker enjoys hiking, skiing and gardening
with her husband. She has four grown children and nine
grandchildren.
