Clubs and Organizations

Student Council

     Harry Hoag Elementary School Student Council is composed of representatives from each grade, 4-6, plus an elected president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Only sixth grade students may run for president; only fifth grade students may run for vice-president; anyone may run for secretary and treasurer. Candidates must have at least an average of 70 and submit petitions signed by at least 20 students. Candidates for president and vice president also need a teacher recommendation. All students in grades 4-6 vote for officers with each grade level voting for its own representatives. Candidates l make campaign speeches in the gym in front of all students in grades 4 - 6. Council members help make decisions and organize events.

Talented and Gifted Program

       CHALLENGING MINDS is open to any student in grades 3-6 and starts in January, 2012. The group meets once per month, usually on Fridays, from 2:45 – 3:45 p.m. in room 61. Activities are directed by Lauri Dahlin, Talented and Gifted Co-Advisor

      CHALLENGING MINDS JR.  is this year working with students in grades 1-3. Students meeting in October worked on trivia games, tested their general knowledge and competed with both teams and head-to-head.November's session was riddles and word Games. Students participated in a variety of activities that let them use their problem solving, reasoning and special planning skills.
         MATH FACTS challenges students in grades 3-6 to become a Math Fact “Fiend,” “Fanatic," or “Phenom.” A Fiend is able to correctly complete 100 math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division in five minutes or less. A Fanatic correctly completes the 100 math facts in four minutes or less; and the Phenom completes the facts in three minutes or less.
        Students who become Fiends, Fanatics, or Phenoms will have their names displayed in the district newsletter, receive a certificate, and earn Topper Bucks, according to the student’s level and type of facts being tested. Memorizing math facts is an important skill that improves a student's chance to be successful in math.
        Math Facts runs from January, 2012 to June, 2012 and sessions are from 2:45 – 3:45 p.m., usually on Fridays in room 61. Math Facts is directed by Lauri Dahlin, Talented and Gifted Co-Advisor.

Chess Club

ADVISORS: Ted Arndt, Liz Arndt
WHO CAN JOIN: Starting in January, 2012, students in grades 3-6. After students from previous chess clubs have been invited to participate, the remainder of players will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis. Total membership is a maximum of 34 students. A minimum threshold of academic and behavioral performance is required in order to participate.
The chess club season lasts about six weeks.
Purpose: Students will learn basic chess and participate in informal competition . A tournament will be held in February.
