enables family reading nights to continue at Fort Plain
Fort Plain Central School District recently
was awarded a $2,000 Early Literacy Grant from Target to continue
the “Learning to Live/Living to Learn” Family Reading Nights. Four
reading nights will be hosted at the Harry Hoag Elementary School
Library throughout the year (dates to be announced):
• Reading Night #1: Getting Along
• Reading Night #2: Helping Each Other
• Reading Night #3: Saying Thank-You
• Reading Night #4: Making Friends
Students attending will receive a picture book
to bring home and read with their families. Library staff will lead
the reading sessions, modeling behavior that parents can use to
engage their children at home and reinforcing examples that result
in enhanced social skills and emotional intelligence.
The books chosen for the reading nights will
emphasize basic, though important, skills for the youngest students
in the school. These reading nights will give children and their
parents an opportunity to discuss social skills concepts in the
context of a story.
A simple craft activity and a healthy snack
will be part of the evening’s activities. The snack will be provided
by the district’s home economics class.
